Every dollar plants a tree.
Retail therapy, shopaholic, impulse buying – sound familiar?
We’re probably guilty of these things at some point in our lives. Buying stuff – sometimes mindlessly – has become second nature to us. But have we ever thought how this behavior can negatively impact the environment?
The spike in purchases usually occurs on holidays. Take Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day, for example. Did you know that an average American household waste increases by more than 25% within those months? 1 million tons is added to landfills per week because of food leftovers, gift wrappers, and bows.
Our consumer habits also affect climate change. Are you aware of how much greenhouse gas is emitted in the production and use of household goods? It’s 60% according to a 2015 study.
Greenhouse gases negatively affect the environment and our health. For one, they trap heat in our atmosphere which causes climate change. You can see the effects in our erratic weather conditions and increased wildfires. These gases also cause respiratory diseases due to smog and air pollution. Not to mention the effects on endangered wildlife too.
There’s a reason why the saying “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” was instilled in our minds since childhood. These three are essential for environmentally-responsible consumer behaviour.
Another solution is to look for ways in which we can counteract these effects. Go for energy-efficient products and appliances. If you can, walk to your destinations instead of driving your car. Plant trees to trap carbon!
Truth is, we can’t do away with buying things. There are things we need for us to live comfortably. As consumers, we also help drive economic growth and provide jobs. Thankfully, there are companies who are becoming aware of their contributions to climate change and are continuously adjusting their processes to reduce carbon emissions.
Change can only be attained if everyone works hand in hand.
As our way to make a positive change, Giveably introduced the Pro-Earth Revolution. We want to change the way people shop. We want you to enjoy buying high-quality unique stuff and at the same time help our beautiful planet. So for every dollar you spend at Giveably, we plant a tree.
Sometimes we think that individual actions are insignificant. Not at all. Small acts, when done together, can create a big impact, more than we can imagine.
